BARBARA DICKSON - MALVERN THEATRE
(This Is Worcestershire website - 10 May, 2002)

Barbara Dickson was in Malvern as part of a nationwide tour. Her distinctive, `easy on the ear' voice and a scenario of choicest songs was perfection.

Sometimes Barbara played her guitar as she sang but she also allowed space for the listener to relish virtuoso performances from within the band.

One such was the ballad-style theme from Caravans, containing episodes from flute and clarinet, or again, a `rock' delivery of Stuck in the Middle with You, percussion to the fore this time.

When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2, Barbara sang naively, as a child to a doll, against an inspired
keyboard accompaniment.

Her unaccompanied singing in ensemble with the band members for The City of Orleans, in country American style, was highly polished, as was a beautifully expressive This House is Empty Now, incorporating some wonderful clarinet, bass and keyboard playing; Barbara's clever use of her vocal skills, made this number very special indeed.

Folksongs of her native Scotland were outstanding, as brilliant instrumentation simulated fifes, pipes and drums, combined with Barbara's natural alliance with the characteristic rhythms splendidly.

Songs to honour Peggy Lee's memory, from that artiste's repertoire, were sung eloquently.

Barbara's personal interpretation of Where am I Going to? with it's catchy vocal line and marvellous
saxophone and keyboard backings, followed by Adelaide's Lament with extremely amusing lyrics, were enjoyed greatly.

Many other songs were sung, until at the last we delighted in Peace, Love and Understanding, and a
nostalgic Not For Me.

Barbara Dickson is a compelling performer, whose diction is such that every word and nuance is heard clearly.

She is a distinguished musician who makes her art seem effortless, and is endowed with an abundance of energy. Together with her band of top class musicians, enhancing lighting and presentation, she had entertained the enthralled, capacity audience richly.
