THE MORNING STAR - 14 January 1983

If I were to pass comment on this production of the Willy Russell play in terms of storyline, underlying theme, political implications, or if I attempted to compare it to any other play, I might rightfully be charged with trivialising the subject because this is as complete a production as you may wish to view.

Character delivery is of an inspiring nature with noteworthy performances from the well-known recording artist Barbara Dickson and the two local-born actors Andrew Schofield and George Costigan.

It is difficult to imagine that this splendid musical, directed by Chris Bond, could fail to be another Russell hit.

LIVERPOOL DAILY POST - 10 January 1983

A welcome wind, excitement and energy breezed into Liverpool's theatre world on Saturday night. Blood Brothers opened at The Playhouse, with all the hallmarks of a major success...

The method of story-telling is stunning... and there are the performances, each a gem. Among them, Barbara Dickson displays genuine acting talent as the working-class mum, while her clear-voiced singing soars powerfully into the auditorium.

...When (Chris) Bond and his three play-writing associates, Russell among them, took over the Playhouse direction, something special was expected. On Saturday night it arrived.

LIVERPOOL ECHO (10 January 1983)

Willy Russell has done it again: that is, take a commonplace issue, forge it in the white heat of growing social awareness and then present it to the world, via Merseyside, as a masterly piece of theatre.

It is a triumph for all concerned... For Barbara Dickson, launched into big time singing by Mr Russell's Beatles show nine years ago, there's much deserved acclaim for her first singing-acting role as the mother. She really gets to the show's emotional heart in a most beguiling way.

...With all this - and obviously not forgetting memorable music, well played - a London transfer should be assured. In the meantime make a Playhouse ticket a certainty for yourselves.

(Joe Riley)
