Pete Zorn, who was a mainstay of Barbara's live and recording band from the start of her pop career in the early 70's through to 2009, has died after a battle with cancer. He first met and worked with Barbara on the cast recording sessions for 'John Paul George Ringo... & Bert' in 1974 and, striking up a close friendship with her, went on to become a longstanding and much-loved favourite in her touring band. He also played on many of Barbara's studio and live albums and supported her on countless TV performances.
A much sought-after multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Pete also performed live with Richard Thompson, Gerry Rafferty and Fairport Convention and, since 2009, had been a semi-permanent member of the folk-rock band Steeleye Span.
"I am so sad to hear about the death of Pete Zorn, who was my right hand man for about 35 years," Barbara wrote on her Facebook page earlier today. "He played with me in concerts, on TV and on recordings. He was a terrific person and such a character! His funny lines are resounding around all the people who knew him today. He’ll be missed by all of us musicians and all who knew him.
"My late mother adored him and I know all sorts of casual encounters made in his life will have been memorable because of who he was. He was a terrific singer, vocal arranger, woodwind player, guitarist and bass player. His tambourine technique was astonishing.
